Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram, is the first of a kind in India dedicated to research and developement of space science. It was inaugurated on 14 September, 2007 (sacred day of Ganesha Chaturthi) by Dr. G. Madhavan Nair, Chairman ISRO. IIST is sponsored by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) under Department of Space, Government of India. Dr. Abdul Kalam, former President of India, is the chancellor of IIST. This is an excellent choice for students interested in pursuing their career in  space science. In days to come, IIST will become IISc known for its contribution to basic science.

Objectives

  • To offer Under Graduate, Post Graduate, Doctoral and Post-Doctoral programmes in Space Technology, with specialization in Avionics ,Aerospace Engineering and Integrated MSc in Applied Science.
  • To stimulate, conserve and disseminate knowledge in diverse scientific and academic fields.
  • To be an unique institute in the country where education is totally integrated with research work in the areas of Space Technology, Space Science and Space Applications.
  • To create a community of teachers and students of international standards, who combine rigorous academic activity with creative research, simulation and propagation of knowledge.
  • To endorse the institute as an autonomous space of learning which nurtures an academic discipline and work culture which are non-parallel, with the support of highly advanced laboratories and interdisciplinary programmes that redefines the boundaries of conventional academic discourses.
Courses offered
Undergraduate program
Four year Under Graduate course
in (B.Tech) in Space Technology with specialization in Avionics, Aerospace Engineering and Physical sciences

Masters program
(M.Tech) in specialized areas of Space Technology such as Softcomputing, RF and Microwave Communications, Applied and Adaptive Optics etc. Doctoral programmes (Ph.D) in Space Science and Technology.

Post-Doctoral positions, in close association with ISRO, in specialized areas to carry out high-end research.

The candidates are short listed on the basis of the merit lists of IIT JEE examination. The admission is finally granted on the basis of personal counseling.  The students who obtain 1st class are provided placements in ISRO as a Scientist or Engineer with a lucrative pay package.
