The space technology cell at IIT Kharagpur was setup by ISRO in July, 1998. The aim was to strengthen the relationship     of IIT Kharagpur with ISRO and to boost collaborative research programmes with ISRO laboratories. The cell was renamed as Kalpana Chawla Space Technology Cell in 2004. The Joint Policy Committee (JPC) govern the activities of Space Technology Cell, IIT Kharagpur and it consists of 6 members nominated by Director, IIT Kharagpur and 6 members nominated by Chairman, ISRO with Director, IIT Kharagpur as ex-officio Chairman.

Objectives
  • To create a center of Excellence on Space Technology.
  • To promote interdisciplinary research to support Department of Space GOI. This will include   running of specialized courses keeping R & D activities of Department of Space in mind.
  • To become a nodal agency and play a lead role in promoting multi-institutional activities.
  • To involve maximum number of Departments, Centers, Schools in Space Technology Activity.
  • To build a center of Space Research in the name of Kalpana Chawla (Kalpana Chawla Space     Centre, IIT, Kharagpur) to take up all activities related to space research.
The activities of Space Technology Cell was initiated in 1998 in Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur with an aim to work in the areas of MEMS, Communications and Cryogenics including Engine Modeling. Subsequently the areas of materials, control systems, micro propulsion and VLSI design were included. The communications area extended to the areas of RF design, Electromagnetic, EMI/EMC and ESD. Starting with faculty members of the Departments of Electronics & Electrical Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Cryogenic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical & Materials Engineering, Rubber Technology Centre, Advanced Technology Centre, and G. S Sanyal School of Telecommunication.

Projects
The center has successfully completed many projects to the date.  Some of those projects are
  • Development of Micro-machined Silicon Inertial Micro-sensor for space applications
  • Beam Forming Network (BFN) Analysis for Multifeed Contoured Bean Antennas
  • Development of Voltage Regulator IC for ISRO Applications
  • Design, Analysis and optimization of Navigation Grade Silicon Based MEMS Accelerometer
  • Design of  Laser based Altimeter for Space Applications
  • Development of MEMS Based Vaporising Liquid Micro-thruster for Space   Applications
  • Fault tolerant control of satellite launch vehicles
The center works closely with ISRO for many missions of latter. The center also undertakes sponsored and consultancy projects.

Opportunities
Courses
The center conducts short-term courses from time to time for the benefit of the students. In addition, the center conducts the seminars/workshops as well.
Some of the courses conducted so far are,
  • Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP)
  • Frequency and Spectrum Management
  • Electromagnetic Modeling of Composite Metallic and Dielectric Structures
  • Efficient Systems for Microwave Transmission and Radiation (Jan 18-23, 2010)
Job
The center hires project staff/assistants to work on various sponsored/consultancy projects. Again, this is a good opportunity for students who want to work in space science domain.

Facilities
The center has good facilities like specialized library with over 1000 books on space technology,  software lab with licences of CST microwave studio and a radio frequency lab.
