Indian Space Research Organisation to test its reusable RLV spacecraft

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO ) plans the first test of its homegrown fully Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV). The RLV-TD (Technology Demonstrator) mission is currently scheduled to be sent aloft in late July or early August, according to M.C. Dathan, the Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC).

The RLV, resembling a small winged aircraft, will be launched up to an altitude of 43 miles (70 km) from atop a solid booster rocket and released. The spacecraft will re-enter the atmosphere and travel back to Earth in a controlled descent, to be recovered from the sea.

“It will be a winged vehicle that will take off vertically like a rocket and glide back to land horizontally like a plane,” said S. Somanath, the VSSC Deputy Director.

The development of RLV is in the final stages. The spacecraft has been configured to act as a flying test bed to evaluate various technologies; namely, hypersonic flight, autonomous landing, powered cruise flight, and hypersonic flight using air-breathing propulsion.

Come second half of July, India's space agency is likely to test a small model of reusable launch vehicle shaped like an aeroplane, said a senior official.

"It is going to be an important engineering experiment for the Indian space agency. A small aeroplane-shaped vehicle would be launched from here sometime during the second half of July," M.Y.S.Prasad, director, Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) told IANS over phone from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.

India launches its rockets from SDSC in Sriharikota, around 80 km from Chennai.

According to officials at Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro), the launch vehicle will be mounted on a strap-on solid booster of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket with 9 tonnes of fuel.

SRIHARIKOTA: The Indian Space Research Organization is set to test its sophisticated, indigenously-built, multi-object tracking radar (MOTR) on a rocket flight next month while formal commissioning is expected to take three months time, said a senior official.

"The MOTR designed and developed by Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) will be tested next month during a PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) rocket flight. The formal commissioning of the system is expected to happen three months down the line," SDSC director MYS Prasad told reporters here.

 

The space scientists with justifiable pride were showcasing the state-of-the-art radar that can track 10 objects simultaneously objects up to 30cm by 30cm at distance of 800km.
