 Introduction to CanSat
The concept of CanSat was proposed by Prof. Robert Twiggs (currently in Morehead State University) at the University Space Systems Symposium (USSS) held in Hawaii. The proposal was to fit the entire components of a satellite into a Soda can (of around 350ml) and launch it using a balloon to a height of hundreds of meters or kilo-meters.

As the CanSat does a controlled descent using a parachute, it captures the interesting data as per the payload on-board and transmits it to the ground station. This concept was mainly targeted at the students and universities to give them a low-cost access to complete space engineering at the same time retaining the complexity of actual orbital satellites. Over the period of time, this concept has become popular among the student and research community due to its educational advantages and also potential applications in various areas.

There are many annual international CanSat related competitions being held in many countries like USA, European countries every year. In these competitions, the students will design, develop and launch their CanSat carrying their payloads. Though, the initial proposal was to use the balloons for the launch however the students have come out with the interesting methods to launch using small scale rockets and model aircrafts too.

A low-cost opportunity for high-end research
As mentioned above, the CanSat concept is an excellent platform for the educators and students to give first level exposure to space engineering and to experience engineering challenges in building a satellite. Even with the restricted size and volume, the CanSat could carry various interesting payloads for the research. It could have multiple sensors to capture the atmospheric parameters, an on-board camera for video and images and also it could also be used for testing some of the payloads intended for high-altitude balloon experiments.

Another added benefit is the reduced life cycle and cost of the project. Compared to a small student satellite, the CanSat projects could be realized within a year with a small budget compared to 3-4 years of life cycle and the large budget of former.

Team Xovian and Indian Space Station organizations have collaborated to give the experience of small scale space missions to every student in India.  At the end of this 2-days workshop, we guarantee that each of the participants will become an expert in CanSat oriented project and research works and you could independently conduct the future CanSat missions for your experiments.

Advantages to students/universities

  • Scope for working on interesting CanSat payloads as part of their thesis or research work.
  • An opportunity to work on communication related research topics and validate your solution using CanSat.
  • A low-cost mechanism for universities to collect various atmospheric and terrain data (image/video) for their research work.
  • The CanSat based projects are low-cost but with a high returns in terms of number of students involved, project life cycle and the experience gained. This is also an ideal platform for the students to learn about the importance of the team management and project management skills.
  • The CanSat based projects will open up a new area of interesting research topics to work on which will translate into patents or publication for the universities.
  • The patents and the publications could come from every engineering department as this is a truly multidisciplinary field.  

 Workshop Details
The workshop is designed in a way that the each team will get to do more of practical work and less of theory sessions. Each team will be given a dedicated CanSat developer kit to make sure that everyone get an equal opportunity to learn and be an expert.

CanSat System Overview
The CanSat is a non-orbital miniature version of a satellite containing most of the important sub-system. The CanSat design and components varies from project to project depending upon the requirement and the use case.

The CanSat board used in these 2-day workshops contains the following modules.

  • Central processing unit (CPU)
  • Communication module
  • Payloads
  • Power unit and circuitry
  • Storage
  • Landing and decent control
  • Software/post-launch analysis

Registration and pricing

  • Rs. 6250*** for a maximum of 5 students per team.

The workshop is currently being offered to students only and it will be held in certain university campuses. We would recommend the students to form a team by themselves before registering but not compulsory.

Depending upon the number of students from each college/place, we will arrange the workshop at college/place.

Reward for the best team:

The team showcasing the great skills in integration of components, embedded programming and launching the CanSat will be awarded with a special certificate of merit.

CanSat Certification:

At end of the 2 day workshop, the participants will be in a position to conduct their own CanSat missions independently. This invaluable expertise is identified by giving them a CanSat Certificate" at the end of the workshop.


  • The workshop is open to all space enthusiasts with session duration adjusted as per the participants’ background.

Student Ambassador Program
We are providing an opportunity for the students to be part of the Space revolution being ignited by us. We want to make sure that a set of leaders are trained and guided to carry out similar activities in their local region and college in the near future. The student ambassador program is an initiative towards that direction.

We are calling for highly motivated students to be part of this on-going CanSat leadership training program.


  • The student ambassador completing the program successfully with be awarded a certification duly marking leadership and technical capabilities
  • The team comprising the student ambassador will be given a discount of Rs. 1000 on the workshop fee.
